At Tech Tire Spot, we’ve seen that many car owners in Ethiopia struggle to understand tire sizes. One of the most common questions we get is:
"What’s the difference between 195/65R15 and 185/70R14?"
Understanding tire size helps you:
Buy the right tire without wasting money
Improve fuel economy and safety
Avoid mismatched or illegal tires
Let’s simplify it for you.
---
You can find your car’s tire size in three places:
Sidewall of your current tire – looks like: 205/55R16 91V
Sticker on driver's door – manufacturer’s recommendation
Owner’s Manual – full specifications
---
1. Tire Width – 205 (in millimeters)
This number shows the tire’s width from side to side. In Ethiopia, common sizes are 175, 185, 195, and 205.
Wider tires (e.g., 225) = Better grip but more fuel usage
Narrow tires (e.g., 165) = Less grip, better mileage
2. Aspect Ratio – 55
This shows the height of the sidewall as a % of the width.
55 means the height is 55% of 205mm.
Low ratio (40–55) = Sporty handling, less comfort
High ratio (65–80) = Soft ride, ideal for Ethiopian roads with bumps
R = Radial tire, most modern tires use this.
Radial tires are flexible and long-lasting.
Make sure this number matches your wheel (rim) size.
A 16" tire must fit a 16" rim only.
---
Step 3: Load Index and Speed Rating – 91V
Load Index – 91
This tells you how much weight one tire can carry.
Example: 91 = 615 kg per tire
Speed Rating – V
Tells the max speed the tire can handle safely.
T = 190 km/h
H = 210 km/h
V = 240 km/h
Use the same or higher speed rating recommended by your car.
---
M+S = Mud & Snow – Good for rainy seasons
XL = Extra Load – Needed for heavier vehicles
DOT Code = Tire manufacturing date (very important in Ethiopia for checking age)
---
> "Always check your car manual and local road conditions before choosing tire size. What works in Dubai may not work on Addis Ababa roads!"
